The old students’ association of the Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) have sunk a bore-hole with pipe-stand for the second cycle institution to help bring to an end the intermittent acute water problem that confronts the school.
Determined to give meaning to their Golden Jubilee celebration which is due in 2013, the boys from the Wa-based St. Francis Xavier Junior Seminary, made minced meat of the usual league of Ghana’s elite schools during the just ended 2012 edition of the National Science and Maths quiz held at University of Ghana, Legon. Represented by the awe inspiring trio of Richard Taabazuing, Lucio Dery and Stephen Boosuro.
Ghana’s premier senior high school (SHS), Mfantsipim School in Cape Coast, last Friday won the 2014 National Science and Maths Quiz in style, 15 years after it won the trophy. That was after Mfantsipim, represented by Archibald Henry Enniful and Isaac Kontomah, had defeated the Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) in Takoradi and St Francis Xavier Junior Seminary in Wa to lift the giant trophy at stake.
Members of the Parent-Teacher Association of the Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) in Takoradi have honoured a 17-year-old immediate past student of the school, Mickail Hassan. Hassan was honoured for being the 2014 best candidate of the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE), both in Ghana and West Africa. Master Hassan who resides in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis, made the entire nation and his alma mater proud by emerging as the best 2014 WASSCE student in West Africa.
He also emerged as the best General Science student together with his younger brother Hassan Nurulhaq, and one other student in the same school, Prince Edmund Ainoo. For their prizes, the three former GSTS students were given undisclosed amount of money and a certificate by the PTA at a brief ceremony. The three had already received several awards, including scholarships to further their respective tertiary education.
Later in an interview, Mickail Hassan attributed his achievement to being God-fearing, discipline and hard work and encouraged all students to be guided by those three in all their endeavours. Chairman of the PTA, Timothy Ebo Essandoh, called on parents to be responsible in the provision of the basic needs of their wards in the school.
He also appealed to past students of GSTS, home and abroad to come to the aid of their alma-mater with the needed support. Regional News of Wednesday, 24 June 2015
Accra, March 12, GNA – Ghana has for the past five years toped the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) Competition for the international excellence award, WAEC announced on Thursday. For the year 2014, all three Ghanaian candidates who participated in the award with other WAEC students, swept all the three top awards offered at that level once again.The overall top candidate, Hasan Mickail, a former student of Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) in the Western Region, who was the best candidate in the General Science programme, both at the national and international level, also won the Bandele Award for the best performing candidate in the whole of West Africa.Ghana, Nigeria, and the Gambia participated in the 2014 WAEC examination, while Liberia and Sierra Leone, the two other WAEC countries, did not participate in the examinations due to the Ebola pandemic and a change in those countries educational system.
The Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) in Takoradi was crowned winners of the fifth edition of the Annual Osagyefo Cup Competition held to mark the birthday of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah. The competition, organised on every Founders Day, at the Half Assini Senior High School (HASCO) in the Jomoro District of the Western Region, saw GSTS, popularly known as the ‘Giants of the West’ beat their counterparts Kikam Technical Institute (KIMTECH), from the Ellembele District 4-2 on penalties after sixty minutes of goalless draw.

Mr Asford Adams, the Headmaster of Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) has bemoaned the deteriorating state of the school’s infrastructure which is gradually having its toll on teaching and learning. He said bed bugs had infested the dormitories of the school, giving students sleepless nights and uncongenial atmosphere for quality academic work. Mr. Adams said this at the 106th speech and prize giving day of GSTS on the theme: The Role of Science, Technical and Vocational Education in the Development of the Nation. At least five senior high schools in the Western Region have been invaded by bedbug, causing discomfort and health problems for the students, which is hampering academic work. The affected schools include the Sekondi College, St John’s Senior High School and Ghana Secondary/Technical School (GSTS), all in the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis. The others are the Esiama Senior High School in the Ellembelle District and Nsein Senior High School in the Nzema East District. When the Daily Graphic followed up on the issue in five of the schools, the infestation was confirmed and in some of the schools, the bugs could be found in crevices of walls and ceilings of dormitories, as well as in the wooden beds on which the students slept
Takoradi, Jan. 12, GNA – Belongings of students of the Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) have been quarantined to undergo fumigation as part of an exercise to rid the school of bed bugs.The exercise, sponsored by the Giants Association (the alumni of the school), is to ensure that the school is rid of the blood sucking insects.Mr Ralph Menz, Secretary of the Association, said the Giants Association worldwide had contributed over GHC 55000 to enable Jem Intercontinental Services Limited undertake a one week fumigation exercise in and around the school compound.Mr Emmanuel Hazel, lead fumigator, attributed the situation to over population of the school and bad sanitary conditions.
He called for an intensification of the inspection regime by house masters to ensure that students thoroughly clean and maintain a healthy environment in the school.Giant Ebo Simpson, Executive Member of the Association, said a team of engineers, planners and quantity surveyors have been dispatched to carry out structural integrity assessment plans for the school.He said the association is also helping the school to develop a master plan and this may call for the total demolition of some structures and renovations for others.
Dr Ashitey Trebi-Ollennu is a Fellow of the IEE (U.K.) and a Senior Member of the IEEE (USA). He was born in Accra, Ghana. He currently works on Mars Exploration Rover Operations Team of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States. Dr Ashitey Trebi-Ollennu attended Garrison Primary School in Burma Camp and Ghana Secondary Technical School Takoradi for his O’ and A’ level). He had his Bachelors in Engineering (B.Eng.) in Avionics at Queen Mary College, University of London in 1991 where his dissertation was on Review of 4-D guidance techniques and the simulation of 4-D aircraft guidance.
